World’s Best Scones

by amiable

Every once in a while I get weird food cravings. This one was for scones with fig jam. My body was very specific–not strawberry or blueberry jam, not marmelade–fig jam. I’ve only had it once before, a few years ago during a lovely holiday visit with my brother-in-law Michael’s family in Annapolis, MD. Mike’s mom, Janice, whipped up a bunch of scones with fig jam and I thought they were incredible. So now, 3 years later, I find myself in the middle of Wegmans trying to find fig jam.

I love Wegmans. Love. Them. Eventually, I’ll do a post devoted entirely to how much I love them. Until then, let it suffice to say that they have never let me down. Need key lime juice that I thought I could only find in Key West? Wegmans had it. Fig jam? Check.

What to do for a recipe? As far as I know, my grandmother and bubby were not known for their scones. Apple cake, yes. But not scones. So, I turned to an old reliable source–allrecipes.com. I’m not a recipe snob. I’m happy to take recipes where I can find them.

This recipe came under the title: World’s Best Scones! From Scotland, to the Savoy, to the US. It was created by someone named ‘Friendlyfood.’ Recipe is located at AllRecipes here: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Worlds-Best-Scones-From-Scotland-to-the-Savoy-to-the-US/Detail.aspx

The scones turned out fantastic. I substituted whole wheat flour for 1/2 of the regular stuff. My only other change was to add chocolate chips. There are very few baked goods to which I don’t add chocolate chips. The jam I used was Dalmatia Fig Jam. Delicious and highly recommended.

Lessons learned:

-Kevin doesn’t like scones. He says he does and is willing to eat 1/2 of the first one I make, but then the plate sits there untouched.
-There are times that the thought of getting out of bed and going to work is just too much and it’s helpful at those times to have a chocolate chip scone with fig jam to look forward to.
-Also, sometimes when I get home from work and feel a bit mopey from a bad day, it’s also helpful to have some scones and jam on hand.
-Notice how dark the background of the photo looks? That’s because these scones are especially tasty as midnight snacks!
