Roadside BBQ

20 minutes into the super-secret back way down to Cape May, I had to go to the bathroom. My husband Kevin, used to this request, immediately looked for a place to pull over. Scouting the area, we noticed a roadside bbq joint and knew that would be our dinner.

Brother Bear’s BBQ is a lip-smacking, finger-licking good meal. Located in Atco, on Route 30, across the street from Mama D’s, it features spare ribs, pulled pork and other slow-cooked bbq. They use a dry rub to infuse the meat with flavor. However, for those people who like a more ‘wet’ bbq (Kevin), they have sauce on hand. We ordered the ribs, a pulled pork sandwich and a side of sweet-potato fries.
Kevin liked the pork sandwich the best. The pork was savory with just the right amount of seasoning. For me, the bread to pork ratio was off. If anything, I would have enjoyed more meat and a smaller roll.
The ribs were succulent, bone-sucking, and amazing. I ate way too many and still had enough for breakfast the next morning. The meat fell right off of the bone. I can’t say enough good things about the ribs.
In addition to the great food, the people there were super-friendly. They didn’t seem to mind my countless photos/questions and said they are working on a more permanent structure in that location.
Kevin and I were in agreement about our favorite part of the meal: while we were waiting for our food, the cook offered us a sample of some smoked apple sausage. It was incredible. Kevin’s response was ‘mmmmmm!’ Next time, we’re definitely ordering the sausage.

Lessons learned:
–If Kevin is hungry, I don’t have much time to photograph the food
–just because I have an alternative preference (ie less bread/more pork), that doesn’t mean the establishment should get a negative review. Right? Everything was delicious. Who am I to say it should be any different?
–it’s difficult writing reviews. How many ways can great food be described without using the word delicious?
–when excited about eating roadside bbq, make sure to put the car in park and turn off the engine before diving in to the ribs. Otherwise, the steering wheel and gear shift get sticky.
